We want to attract and retain a diverse talent that will bring strength to our organisation through its diversity, and we are committed to providing equal opportunities for existing and potential members of staff. Further information can be found on our equality and diversity page.

Our values and behaviours

Our corporate values and behaviours shape who we are as an organisation and how we act.

They are a framework to help us understand:

  • How we work with each other

  • How we work with our members and stakeholders

  • Our expectations for ourselves and each other

Collaboration: We value collaboration, to pursue shared goals by encouraging and utilising diverse perspectives and working with internal and external colleagues across the organisation.

Inclusion: We value inclusion, where everyone feels valued, understood, and supported to contribute meaningfully.

Ambition: We value ambition, reflecting our desire to achieve best possible outcomes for local government, communities, and individuals.

Respect: We value respect, to ensure fairness, recognition, and shared accountability.

Collaboration

  • Trust – We build and maintain trust and develop relationships to achieve our goals.

  • Share – We communicate clearly and share knowledge to support each other’s success and enhance collaboration.

  • Co-create – We design, build or test solutions together including partners and those with lived experience, making best use of our diverse talents to achieve our goals.

Inclusion

  • Dignity – We treat every person with inherent worth, ensuring they feel valued, supported to contribute and recognised for who they are, regardless of their role or background.

  • Empathy – We seek to understand the perspectives and experiences of others, deepening our connections to lived experience.

  • Compassion – We translate empathy into action, responding with fairness and care to ensure our decisions reflect diverse experiences.

Ambition

  • Commit – We align our effort to achieve our organisational goals, delivering consistently high performance by making best use of our resources, skills, capacity and capabilities.

  • Improve – We continuously learn, adapt and enhance the quality and impact of our work to deliver measurable improvement for members and their communities.

  • Innovate – We explore bold and creative ideas, challenge norms and scale solutions that drive meaningful change.

Respect

Celebrate – We actively recognise each other’s strengths and achievements, making time to acknowledge high standards and the impact of our work. We praise and reward the positive impact we make.

Listen – We listen with curiosity, not judgement, embracing different experiences and circumstances then use evidence to respond accordingly

Accountable – We hold ourselves, and each other, to account to deliver high performance. We seek and offer meaningful, constructive feedback, learning as we go. We challenge poor performance and behaviour.

Pay, Benefits, and Working at the LGA

If you are appointed to a grade that is paid on the nationally negotiated salary scale, then every year you should expect your salary to go up by one spine point until you reach the top spine point for your grade. You will normally be paid on 12th of each month by BACS transfer to your nominated bank account.

Pension

As an employee, you will automatically join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) where we will pay a generous contribution.

Flexible working

We recognise the importance of providing employees with a balance of home and work life. This can include working homebased, flexible hours or part-time working.

Annual leave

LGA annual leave entitlement is 29 days, rising to 31 days after three years’ service and to 33 days after five years’ service, plus all UK public holidays (pro rata for fixed-term and part-time contracts).

In addition to their base salary, LGA employees receive one of the following allowances, determined by their contractual working location:

Travelling to work

Our headquarters, 18 Smith Square, is in the heart of Westminster and provides a base for staff and our members with the UK Parliament and Government departments on our doorstep.. Our building is located close to Westminster, Pimlico, Vauxhall and St James’s Park Underground stations, as well as Victoria, Vauxhall and Charing Cross railway stations. They are all a short 10–20 minutes’ walk away.

There are various bus routes in close proximity to the building, as well as two public car parks nearby if you prefer to drive (Abingdon Street Car Park, Horseferry Road Car Park).
