About us
The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national membership body for local authorities. We work on behalf of our member councils to support, promote and improve local government.
We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils to help them deliver local solutions to national problems.
We also provide councils with the tools and resources to respond to challenges present and emerging, and support improvement across the sector.
We value diversity and encourage applications from all sections of the community to this high-profile role.
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Regional Adviser to work in the West Midlands regional team. This post is a great opportunity for a candidate who is passionate and knowledgeable about local government and wants to be personally involved in supporting improvement in councils at a time of significant change, challenge and opportunity in the sector and at the LGA.
Working closely with the Principal Adviser and other regional colleagues, as Senior Regional Adviser you will act as a key interface between the LGA and local authorities. You will need to be on the front foot, developing and maintaining relationships, partnerships and networks across the regions, and designing and delivering leadership and practical improvement support in councils. This work will include providing high quality scoping and diagnostic work to develop appropriate solutions and interventions for local authorities, and delivering or commissioning peer reviews and peer support to increase efficiency, build capacity and support improvement in local authorities.
You will also be a key building block in our multi disciplinary way of working across the LGA, ensuring that the learning and knowledge you gain from working with our councils is used to great effect not only for our improvement work, but equally to inform our policy development and lobbying work as well.
Your success will be determined by your ability to understand and respond to the highly challenging, politically sensitive and high-profile local government environment in order to manage complexities and risk, and successfully maintain a positive reputation for the LGA with its member authorities.
About you
You have a comprehensive understanding of the issues facing local government and the wider public sector
You have experience of working at a senior, strategic level in local government and can show evidence of being confident and credible in working with leading members, chief executives and senior officers
You will be able to hit the ground running, using your abilities and experience to effectively manage and maintain relationships with individual local authorities, networks and groupings of authorities and to ensure effective delivery of projects and programmes to support sector-led improvement
You must have the right to work in the UK, the LGA are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.
To apply
If you would like to be considered for the role, please complete the online form and include a supporting statement detailing how you meet the criteria for the role before the closing date.
We are specifically assessing candidates against the following criteria:
Demonstrable experience of leading successful projects/programmes
Experience of working with senior officers and members to deliver support
Record of achievement in complex and changing political environments
Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret evidence and develop integrated support plan
Political sensitivity and the ability to exercise appropriate discretion on issues of significance and importance
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to deliver under pressure, prioritising work against competing demands to meet deadlines
Closing Date: 5pm, 12 August 2025
Interview Date: 20 August 2025 at Warwick Business School
